For a long time now I’ve pondered over this statement and asked myself can we be our children’s greatest role models?
Looking back on a day I often think if my children have listened to anything or taken on board a snippet of what I’ve said to them. From a passing remark, to a word of caution, I inevitably feel that it falls on deaf ears! I should, however, give them more credit!
As you know, I’m an advocate for leading a healthier lifestyle – switching off computers by a certain time (I fail miserably at this), getting more active, changing my diet (i.e. what I consume in terms of making smarter, leaner and cleaner choices) etc. I believe that my doing so encourages my children (and friends) to do more of the same thing. Indeed the famous phrase
springs to mind. So, when my seven year old (at the time) turned to me the other day and said “Mum, can I tell you something?” I wondered what was coming …. Perhaps I should have a little more faith!
“Of course,” was the hesitant response from me.
“You know if you eat junk food, well it basically encourages you to eat more of the same food. It’s a sort of reflux action!” I tried, one not to burst into laughter at his misuse or rather mix up of reflux and reflex and two to not jump up and down whooping with glee and admiration! My feelings, thoughts, words and actions are most definitely being noticed by those whom I love around me!
Triumph for mummy!
So you see, even if we think they believe us to know nothing, believe that they never listen to us, we should NEVER underestimate our power as parents. I am very much of the opinion that WE (parents) are indeed our children’s biggest role models.
The sun is supposed to be shining again today, although it is rather cloudy! For many of you, your children are already on holiday … what will you do today that will impact your child(ren) for the rest of their lives? It’s easy to get caught up in the forever turning wheel of our busy, hectic lives and not make better choices. Remember to put your thinking cap on, as those little beady eyes, may just be watching you.

The next time you head for the processed food, the high sugar drink, the refined carbohydrates, take a step back and see if you can make a wiser choice. Those little eyes are watching you. If, like I once was, you are not sure what choices to make, then contact me today to make those first steps. Your first consultation is free.
